Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have decided to enter into a cooperation agreement.
Yesterday Maersk officially announced that it will begin working with Hapag-Lloyd under the name Gemini Cooperation from February 2025, just after the end of the 2M operating alliance with MSC.
A joint communiqué from the two companies emphasizes that the cooperation will enable more timely delivery of cargo to customers. In addition, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd see the partnership as a key tool to overcome the challenges of the energy transition of their large ship fleets, moving toward climate neutrality.
Under the partnership, the two companies will offer a joint maritime network operated by 290 container ships with a total capacity of 3.4 million TEUs. Maersk will provide 60% of the fleet, Hapag-Lloyd the remaining 40%. The scope of the cooperation will include operation of seven routes, including those from Asia to the east and west coasts of the US, Asia to the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and India to Europe and across the Atlantic.
” The announced changes will take place in a revised legal framework following the European Commission’s decision not to renew the CBER (…). Perhaps the corporate psychomotor of the new partners will create a stronger union, able to offer an extensive, stable and trustworthy network of connections on which shippers also care. “ – comments Marek Tarczynski, chairman of PISiL.
